Are you having consistent, regular 1-2-1’s with your team?
If yes, then great – how could we improve them? If not, why not?
Taking time to review performance with team members on a regular basis is a great way of keeping things on track. It means there are less bumps in the road – less surprises along the way. Too many people leave it to a mid year review – or even worse a full year review – or even worse still – not at all!
People need to know whats expected of them, first and foremost, but then we need to having discussions regularly about how they are doing against those things. It shouldn’t all be just numbers either. Their KPI’s should flow into what the over-arching business goals are – and we should be measuring these in a systemised way. We should also be talking to them about behaviours and standards too.
An easy way to have a 5-10 minute 1-2-1 is to use the LION framework.
L – Last week how did that go vs what you set out to achieve?
I – What issues do you experience – what could we do to mitigate those ongoing?
O – What opportunities did you observe in the last week which would positively improve either your performance or the business performance?
N– What is your focus and what are your goals for next week?
How easy is that for a framework? So don’t wait months for a big formal review – weave regular 1-2-1’s with you team into the monthly business calendar. Make sure they know THEY have to be prepped and ready – and come up with the answers to the questions. If you do this regularly they will get used to it…and guess what, they are much more likely to take more responsibility for their actions!
