How often do you use a ‘coaching approach’ with your team?
If you are like most business the answer is probably not very often.
When I ask people what the difference in their head is between coach and manager…usually the response I get is that the approach of coach is a much more nurturing. One that endeavours to get the best out of people, whereas manager is more rigid.
Businesses are collections of people taking a coaching approach to help them reach their potential. It is a great way to improve performance. To do this though, we need to ensure we have given the managers and leaders the tools they need to help them get better at coaching. That’s why whenever we do management and leadership training now, we focus very much on giving the teams coaching tools they can use with their teams.
Coaching is a skill honed over time, but the best teams in my view are taking this approach.
Just think about sports, you’d be hard pushed to find a sporting team or athlete who doesn’t have a coach. They want to be the best they can on the playing field. Business is no different. So my question to you is how can you take more of a coaching approach with your team?
